Highlights

The 2013 Summer Seminar will feature a theatrical, multi-media presentation of the highlights of the history of the Secular Franciscan Order in the United States. The cast will include several Secular Franciscan “actors” and volunteers from the audience.
Segments of our history that will be presented are:

  • Did you ever hear of the Third Order: Early U.S. History - circa 1900; 1916, transcribed from a 1916 book; the 1947 dialogue from the Franciscan Herald and a 2013 version..
  • The Forming of a National Organization: At the 1921 Congress in Chicago, official delegates decided, in dialogue, to form a national organization. Attendees at the Seminar will represent the delegates and read from script taken from official records.
  • The Hour of St. Francis: A popular radio show, then television program, of the mid-twentieth century is presented. A CD recording of the 15-minute program will be played. An up-to-date version will be presented by the cast.
  • The Peace Award and SFO Participation in Civil Rights Activity highlighting the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • The Formulation of the 1978 Rule (taken from Fr. Bob Stewart OFM's dissertation): The Assisi Congress of October 1969 will be emphasized.
  • All the Other Things That We Did: The Modesty Campaign, Don't Shop on Sunday, Regionalization, Quinquennial Congresses, Apostolic Commissions, Salt, Youth/Young Adult Commission, Formation, Multicultural Committee, Ecumenical Committee, JPIC, FAN, and such.
  • Hail St. Francis: You will sing along with Jim and Cindy Wesley, OFS, the official song of the Third Order, Hail St. Francis, which was sung in the past at the regular monthly meetings and at significant events.
