The DiSepio Institute for Rural Health and Wellness at Saint Francis University has expanded its annual Asthma Sports Camp to the Flash Fitness and Fun Day. All children in grades 1 to 6 are invited to participate in an action-packed day of games, basketball, and soccer along with educational programs on nutrition and physical activity; a special track is available for children with asthma. There is no cost to participate.
Flash Fitness and Fun Day will be held on Saturday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Stokes Athletic Center on the Loretto campus. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and morning refreshments will be provided. Students from the University’s physical therapy, physician assistant sciences, and exercise physiology programs will be assisting in the event. Participants will be eligible to win prizes.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of games, basketball, or soccer while working/playing with the Saint Francis University varsity teams; learn fun facts about nutrition and physical activity; and have lunch with the varsity athletes. Participants in the asthma track will also learn the importance of asthma control; learn they can participate and thrive in sports and other activities without being hindered by asthma; and participate in spirometry testing and breathing exercises.
A parent or guardian must accompany each child through registration and the first session (until 10:30 a.m.) Parents/guardians are encouraged to stay for the entire event. General health screenings will be available for adults at no cost. Parents/guardians may purchase lunch tickets at $5 each during the morning registration period.
Deborah Gentile, MD (and a Saint Francis University alumus) and David Skoner, MD, both from Pittsburgh, are the participating physicians. Additional sponsors for the Flash Fitness and Fun Day include the Saint Francis University departments of athletics, physical therapy and physician assistant sciences, in addition to For Your Good Health and TEVA Respiratory. Pre-registration is required by calling 814-472-3923, by September 14.
