2012 recipient of Ann Eppard Congressional Internship

May 3, 2012

The Very Rev. Christian R. Oravec, T.O.R., Ph.D., and President Emeritus of Saint Francis University, and Congressman Bill Shuster announced Shiann McGovern, a Saint Francis University junior from LeContes Mills, PA, as the 2012 Ann Eppard Congressional Scholar. She has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Ann Eppard Congressional Internship and Memorial Scholarship program and will serve as an intern in Congressman Shuster’s Washington D.C. office for six weeks this summer. Shiann is earning a bachelor of arts degree in political science with a concentration in pre-law and a minor in economics.

Congressman Shuster stated, “The Eppard scholarship is very popular at Saint Francis and, subsequently, very competitive. Each year, the selection committee faces a very difficult choice because of the outstanding qualifications of the applicants. We’re fortunate to have such talented students interested in public service and I’m very pleased to announce the award of this scholarship to Shiann. Her academic record is outstanding with a 4.0 GPA and she currently serves in several campus and community public service organizations. She is well-prepared for her internship and her experience will be an invaluable resource for me.”

Father Christian said, “The University is thrilled about the success of this memorial endowment in honor of Ann Eppard who was the first Pennsylvania woman ever to serve in the powerful position of Chief of Staff to a Member of Congress. Ann was described by the Congressional Library of Congress as ‘the most effective Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill,’ so Shiann has a challenging tradition to uphold. We’re confident she will bring credit to Saint Francis and return to the campus to enrich the lives of their fellow students.”

Since Mrs. Eppard’s untimely death on Christmas Eve 2005, the Ann Eppard Memorial Scholarship and Congressional Internship at Saint Francis University has received more than 150 contributions totaling over $177,000. An Honor Roll of the contributors is on display at the university, and tax-deductible contributions may be sent to the fund at the university at: P.O. Box 600, Loretto, PA 15940.
