Red Flash Take 6th Place in Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic
Moon Township, Pa. / Montour Heights Country Club — The Saint Francis men’s golf team finished in 6th place at the 11-team Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic at Montour Heights Country Club. The Red Flash shot a team total of 614, guided by senior Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario / A.B. Lucas.), who made the 5th lowest round of the tournament by firing off a 69 in the first of two rounds. Gowdy finished in 5th place, individually, shooting a 141 (69-73).
The University of Toronto ended up taking home the championship at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic, setting a new tournament record of 586, shattering the previous record by six strokes. Clarion and Canisius tied for 2nd place, both making team totals of 599, but Clarion ended up winning the playoff. IUPUI came in 4th with a total of 600, followed by Duquesne at 613. Saint Francis took 6th place honors at 614, while Fairfield came in one stroke behind the Red Flash in 7th. The rest of the field concluded as follows: Robert Morris 8th (619), Niagara 9th (623), Northwestern Ohio 10th (647) and Hampton 11th (674).
The other noteworthy senior on this fall’s roster who finished in the top 20 was Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec / Academie Les Estacades), tying for 8th place by duplicating 74’s for a total of 148.
The three remaining participants at this event were Michael Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove), Daniel Honchar (Dubois, Pa. / Dubois Area), and Joey Amelia. Magalski took 156 strokes (76-80) to finish out 36 holes to finish in a tie at 28th, while Honchar went for a 171 (84-87), good enough for 53rd. Amelia withdrew from the tournament.
“I was proud of the way our boys played. We finished right in the middle of the pack in a very strong field,” first year head coach Nick Wheeler said. “Once everyone finds 100 percent of their game, we’re definitely the team to beat.”
The Red Flash’s next match is in Littlestown, Pa. where the team will participate in the 3rd Annual Mount Saint Mary's Fall Classic held at the Quail Valley Golf Club. The tournament is slated to be played on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20.
