Flash Men’s Soccer Team Suffers Heartbreaking Defeat In Season Finale

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2007) – Monmouth’s Daniel Bostock tapped in a rebound for his first goal of the season to hand the Saint Francis men’s soccer team a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

Bostock’s goal at 95 minutes, 53 seconds gave the Hawks the win they needed to clinch the top seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament. The Red Flash needed a win or tie on Sunday to secure the home field advantage.

Monmouth improved to 12-4-2 overall, and 7-2 in the Northeast Conference. Saint Francis dropped to 8-8-2 overall, and 6-2-1 in the NEC. The Red Flash will play Sacred Heart at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, in the second semifinal game of the NEC Tournament. The Pioneers are the only other NEC team to defeat Saint Francis this season.

The Red Flash fell behind on an early goal by Ryan Kinne. Michael Millar fed Kinne with a pass just inside the 18-yard box. Kinne took a few dribbles and sent the ball into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Hawks lead at 10:37.

But the Red Flash bounced back with a fury over the next 10 minutes. Senior Jarron Brooks (Mitchellville, Md. / Archbishop Carroll) hit a sensational shot from 21 yards out to tie the match at the 12:56 mark. Freshman Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield) fed senior Bryce Luetzen (Denver, Colorado / Denver Lutheran) with a pass inside the box. Luetzen kicked it back to Brooks, who released a hard shot from about 21 yards out that ricocheted off the cross bar and into the net.

Just under six minutes later, Saint Francis took a 2-1 lead on a goal by sophomore Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys). Fleming and Luetzen again assisted as Moir was able to tap his goal in from three yards out into the right side at 18:53.

However, both teams battled with each team having minimal good chances over the next 77 minutes until Andreas Klang hit a terrific goal similar to Brooks’. Klang struck the ball from about the same spot as Brooks and found the upper right corner to tie the match at 2-2 with 4:59 showing on the clock.

Bostock then clinched the NEC regular season title for Monmouth with his sudden victory goal in overtime.
