SFU Senior Defender Bryce Luetzen Named an ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-American

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2007) – Senior Bryce Luetzen (Denver, Colo. /Denver Lutheran), a defender on the Saint Francis University men’s soccer team, has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).

Luetzen becomes Saint Francis’ 31st all-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, and the first-ever honoree from the Red Flash men’s soccer team. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Men’s Soccer Academic All-America Second Team, and was the only Northeast Conference player on any of the three teams.

Luetzen, a four-year starter and two-year team captain, is an accounting major with a 3.72 grade point average.

He is a leader on the stingy Saint Francis defense that has recorded 28 shutouts during his career. He was a member of the Red Flash defense that allowed former goalkeeper Bobby Pipech to set the school’s all-time record with 15 shutouts. His play and leadership helped junior goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) set the single-season SFU record with eight shutouts this season. Williams has since broken Pipech’s benchmark by recording his 16th career shutout this past weekend.

In conference games only, the Red Flash led the league in 2007 in shutouts (4), and finished third in goals allowed (7) and goals against average (0.75). Luetzen started all 77 matches in which he has played during his career. He has played a pivotal role in helping the Red Flash to the first three NEC playoff appearances in program history, including two straight (2006 and 2007) appearances in the NEC championship match. He finished the season with three assists as a stay-at-home defender, and has posted 21 career points. Luetzen, who is a Saint Francis and NEC Academic Honor Roll student, is a VITA Volunteer for the Dorothy Day Center, where he prepares tax returns for low income families. He helps coach local youth soccer teams (2004-07), is a four-year volunteer with the Pennsylvania Special Olympics, participates in Relay for Life, and is a member of Outreach to local elementary school children. Luetzen is also a member of Sigma Beta Delta, a Business Honors Society.
