Annapolis, Md. – The Saint Francis men’s golf team is locked in a tie at ninth place with Millersville University at the 2008 Navy Spring Invitational after firing a five-man total of +17, 301 on the beautiful Naval Academy Golf Course.
Senior Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario / A.B. Lucas) came out with the lowest score of his comrades, shredding the 6,528 yard challenge with an even par 71 (35-36). Gowdy is deadbolted with Iona’s Russel Giglio and Niagara’s Chris Singleton at fourth place.
Last week’s NEC Golfer of the week, second-year swinger Mike Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove), is tied at 27th after inking a 75 (39-36) with his freshman buddy freshman Joey Amelia (Chatham, Ontario/Chatham-Kent Secondary). Amelia’s 75 (35-40), the lowest round of his young career, came on possibly the toughest layout of the year.
Fourth year veteran Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) carded an 80 (41-39), slotting him in a tie for 68th while junior Kyle DeYulis (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) finds himself in a tie at 86th after turning in an 84 (39-45).
Iona College leads the 18-team field with a +7, 291 while Niagara and George Washington “B” brings up the rear in second with +10, 294 totals.
Saint Francis hopes the rains will hold off for Sunday’s round in an effort to make a move up the charts when they tee off for round two tomorrow.
