Dade City, Fla. (April 25, 2008) – After day one of the 2008 Northeast Conference Championships, the Saint Francis University women’s golf team is currently listed nine strokes behind tournament-leading Fairleigh Dickinson for fourth place. Collectively, the Red Flash threaded a five-man total of 333 (+45).
Saint Francis, the most triumphant squad in NEC Tournament history, looks to secure their third straight, eighth overall, Northeast Conference Championship this week at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
Two-time defending Northeast Conference champion, senior Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, Pa./Center), put forth SFU’s best effort with a +6, 78 (38-40) to lock herself in a four-way tie at second place on Friday. Milosh’s 38 was tied for the lowest nine-hole aggregate thus far. The NEC record holder for lowest round in tournament history with a 69 in 2006 will try and break loose from the pack in Saturday’s trial while she has FDU’s Michele Holzwarth on her hands along with Lisa Warrilow and Sacred Heart’s Joanne Martorana. Holzwarth has collected the last four consecutive NEC Golfer of the Week awards, six overall, while Milosh has been recognized four times from the folks in Somerset, N.J. throughout the 2007-2008 docket.
Sophomore Lisa Kocin (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) threw together a +12, 84 (40-44), securing a 15th place tie with Long Island’s Natalie Desjardins. Desjardins received NEC Golfer of the week appreciation on October 10, 2007.
Senior Stephanie Switzer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) carded a +13, 85 (38-47), landing her in a tie at 17th place with Sacred Heart’s Lauren Foster. First-year player Caryn Doege (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) sits alone in 19th place after inking a +14, 86 (44-42) while freshman Laura Smith (State Line, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) shot a +21, 93 (48-45) to tie her at 34th with St. Francis (NY)’s Emily Wisener and Monmouth’s Julia Drygas.
With only nine strokes separating the top four teams, the Red Flash look to shred the 5,820 yard challenge in day two of competition on Saturday, April 26th in order to gain some comfort room for Sunday’s final round.
