 Saint Francis Lacrosse Strengthens 2009 Squad

LORETTO, Pa. (July 30, 2008) -- Saint Francis University head lacrosse coach, Steph Marcon, announced that four more student-athletes will join the team in the fall and help invigorate the 2009 Red Flash squad.  Caitlyn McGowan, Katie Jenkins, Katie Simmons, and Brittany Kovacs will all join the young  Saint Francis team as they will fight to improve upon its 2008 campaign. 

McGowan (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) is a three-year high school letter winner who will bring her experience as an attack and defenseman to the Flash squad.  She was a member of the 2Knights Summer Select Team for three years.  McGowan is the daughter of Thomas and Gerianne McGowan and intends to pursue a career in occupational therapy.  


Jenkins (Pittsford, N.Y./ Our Lady of Mercy), a three-sport athlete, enters as a six-time letter winner.   A leader on and off the field, the five-time high school team captain is a New York State Scholar Athlete.  She was also a 2008 “Player to Watch” in Section V.  Jenkins is the daughter of James and Susan Jenkins and will enter Saint Francis as an English/communications, education major.  She is also a published author and was a member of the National Society of High School Authors.  

Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran), a center and midfielder, is anticipated to be an offensive threat.  Simmons was a four-year starter for the Bears.  She led her team in assists and scored 102 goals through her junior year and was named to the Courier Post First team All-Group 1 South Jersey in 2007.  Simmons was also Second Team All-Burlington Country in 2006 and 2007 and a recipient of the DHS #1 Club Leadership Award for leadership on and off the field.  The daughter of Richard and Mary Simmons, she will major in exercise physiology.

Kovacs (Oshawa, ONT./R.S. McLaughlin C.V.I.) enters Saint Francis as a three-time captain and MVP for the Trojans.  The center was a four-year Honor Roll member and an Ontario Scholar.  She is daughter of Andre and Diana Kovacs.  Her intended field of study is chemistry.  

The new recruits join seven others who committed to the Red Flash earlier in the year: Katherine Dacany (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls),  Sheri Fort  (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township), Jenna Griffiths (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy), Chelsea Kent (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs), Lauren Kerley (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), and Katie Chiappini (Chester Springs, Pa./Downington East).
