Red Flash Soccer Ties Canisius 1-1 in Double Overtime

LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2008) - For the second time this weekend, the Saint Francis women’s soccer team’s game went into overtime, with the Red Flash tying the Canisius Golden Griffins 1-1 on Sunday afternoon in Buffalo.

The Red Flash return home to take on the Youngstown State Penguins at 4 PM on September 19 at the DeGol Soccer Complex. The will also play host to Temple at 1 PM on September 21 in Loretto.

This is the fourth time Saint Francis has played an overtime game this season. Only three of the team’s games went into overtime last season, and only one game this season had ended in regulation. The Flash beat Holy Cross 4-2 on August 29 in only 90 minutes of play.

Captain Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic) scored the team’s lone goal. The senior forward scored off a direct kick that went past Golden Griffins goaltender Caroline Roberts. The unassisted goal was Vespa’s first of the season. She now has a goal, two assists, and 11 shots on the season.

Goalkeeper Lauren Fearer (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area) appeared in her second contest of the season, with 7 saves off 8 shots. Fearer is now 1-0-1 this season.

"She was outstanding for us today," said head coach Brenda van Stralen. "She really stepped up."

Junior forward Britnni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa./Kams City) and freshman midfielder Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) each had 3 shots, while junior forward Rachael Seibert (Murraysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had 2. The Red Flash had 13 shots to the Golden Griffins’ 20.

The Red Flash are currently riding a school-record unbeaten streak. The last time the team lost was in 2007, when they fell to the Monmouth 1-0 on October 28. They have not lost in seven consecutive games.
