Red Flash Field Hockey Team Stunned in OT Loss Versus Quinnipiac
LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2008) – Senior Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek) stopped nine shots, but Quinnipiac’s Kaitlyn Notarianni scored the game’s only goal in the 83rd minutes to hand the Saint Francis field hockey team a gut-wrenching 1-0 overtime loss on Friday night at DeGol Field.
Reifsteck stop Notarianni’s initial shot on a breakaway, but the rebound came out to the left post. Notarianni lifted the ball over a defender’s stick and into the goal cage for the game-winner at 82 minutes, 51 seconds.
The Red Flash dropped to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast Conference with the loss. The Bobcats improved to 5-9, 3-2. SFU will be back in action with its Senior Day at Noon on Sunday against Sacred Heart.
Saint Francis nearly won the game just under four minutes into overtime when senior Belen Albanes (Atlanta, Ga. / Dunwoody) had a good shot from six yards out at the right post. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jenna Grossman made the save, and Albanes’ attempt at lifting the rebound over Grossman wound up going over the goal cage.
The Bobcats held a 10-4 advantage in shots, and a 9-4 edge in penalty corners. The game marked the first time in school history that Saint Francis held a team scoreless during regulation in a home contest. The Red Flash had their first shutout in program history just two weeks ago at Siena (3-0).
