Red Flash in Third Place After First Day of NEC Championships
New Haven, Conn. (Feb. 12, 2009) – The Saint Francis swim team currently sits in third place after day one of the Northeast Conference swimming championships at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
In the first event of the day, the 50-yard freestyle, Elise Merrill (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) took fifth place with a time of 24.63. Merrill picked up 10 points for the team as teammates Angela Marino (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) and Blair Kosela (Crescent, Pa./Moon Township) placed 10th and 12th, respectively.
Melissa Heintz (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) touched the wall in a tie for seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle, grabbing six points for the team. Cara Morgan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) took ninth in the event and Bethany Lanzendoen (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) grabbed tenth place, picking up seven more points for the Red Flash.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Jessica Dunn (Bristow, Va./Seton School) finished in a time of 2:12.61 and took fifth place. Kristen Low (Mississauga, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) was right behind her in tenth place with a time of 2:15.01.
The Red Flash 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Merrill, Heintz, Marino and Meg Seale (Winchester, Va./Seton School) grabbed the team’s highest finish of the day, taking second place in a time of 1:39.30.
The 400-yard medley relay also found success, placing third in the event. The team of Dunn, Heintz, Elyse Peterman (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), Abi May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) touched the wall in a time of 4:01.84.
The Flash will continue with day two of the NEC Championships tomorrow morning.
