Red Flash Track & Field Announces Class of 2013
LORETTO, Pa. (March 25, 2009) – Shaun Foley (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame), Jennifer Haffner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), Alexis Hurd (Manchester, Md./North Carroll), Sean Kirby (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), Jessica Markovitch (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Rebecca Webster (Lithia, Fla./Newsome) have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Saint Francis track & field teams for the 2009-10 season, as announced by head coach Felix Moreno on Wednesday.
I am very pleased to welcome Shaun, Jennifer, Alexis, Sean, Jessica and Rebecca to Saint Francis,” said Moreno. “This young and talented group of student-athletes will make an immediate impact to both our cross country and track & field programs. At Saint Francis University, we take great pride in finding the best student-athletes and I look forward to working with them.”
Foley comes to Loretto with a ten-time letterwinner for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame HS. A distance runner, Foley was a member of Notre Dame’s indoor relay team that took the state title in 2006. He was named Second Team All-County and All-Area for three years in cross country and also earned Second Team All-Area and All-County honors in the 3,200 meter run as a sophomore. Foley is a member of the National Honor Society and the Chairman of the Student Government. An honor roll student, he will join the Physician’s Assistant program at SFU.
Haffner also competed in both track and cross country for the Highlanders of Baldwin HS. She specialized in the 800- and 400-meter runs as well as the mile event and finished 4th in the WPIAL in the 800 in 2008. A valuable relay runner, Haffner competed in the 4 x 800 meter relay, the 4 x 400 meter relay and the distance medley relay. A team captain who has three letters in cross country and four in track, Haffner will major in Business/Accounting.
Hurd is a five-time All-Conference honoree and four-time conference champion who was a member of North Carroll’s 4 x 200-meter relay team that took the state title in 2006-07. The relay helped the Panthers take home the state championship the same season. Hurd holds records in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter events for the outdoor season and the 55- and 300-meter events indoors She is also a member of five record-setting relays and has been named the North Carroll Outstanding Track Performer of the Year three times. Hurd has been awarded All-County honors a total of seven times. A 12-time letterwinner in indoor and outdoor track as well as soccer, Hurd is an honor student who will enter Saint Francis as an exploratory major.
Kirby comes to SFU as no stranger to winning after leading the River Hill Hawks to the state championship in 2007 and a state finalist slot in 2008. He earned First Team All-County Honors in 2007 and 2008, First Team All-Metro Honors in 2008, Second Team All-County Honors in 2008, Third Team All-State Honors in 2007 and was named team MVP in 2006 and 2008. Kirby was the runner up at the state cross country meet in 2008, and earned letters in track, cross country and wrestling. A member of the Athletic Leadership Council and a Scholar-Athlete Award winner, Kirby will enter Saint Francis as an Exploratory major.
Markovitch hails from Tarentum, Pa., and spent the past four years at Deer Lakes HS. She is a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that holds the school record for the Lancers with a time of 4:07, and also holds in individual record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.61. A four-year letterwinner in track & field, Markovitch excels in the classroom as well and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She intends to major in Occupational Therapy.
Webster comes to Saint Francis with letters in track, cross country and soccer at Newsome HS in Florida after spending her freshman and sophomore years at Geissen HS in Geissen, Germany. Webster ran the five-kilometer event for the Wolves cross country team and specialized in the 800-meter run and the 4 x 400 meter relay for the Newsome track team, and was a member of Newsome’s 4 x 800 meter relay team that took 5th place at the state meet in 2008. She was named to the Tampa Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County Cross Country First Team and received numerous awards, like the Dr. Ben Walker Award for Outstanding Female Cross Country Runner in Hillsborough County (2008), Florida State Cross Country Finals Award (2007, 2008) and Newsome High School’s Most Outstanding Athlete in Cross Country (2008). Webster has earned certificates of outstanding academic achievement in numerous subjects, and is a member of the Rho Kappa Honor Society and the National Honor Society, as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After volunteering in a number of places throughout high school, including Sullivan Rehab/Physical Therapy Clinic and the Bloomingdale Public Library, Webster intends to major in Physical Therapy.
