Institute for Contemporary Franciscan Life

Mission Statement:

Recognizing that Franciscan formation is a life-long process, the Institute for Contemporary Franciscan Life offers a program of study which seeks to deepen the knowledge of Secular Franciscans and others in the areas of Franciscan sources and life. The Institute provides a framework in which the heritage of Francis of Assisi and the Secular Franciscan Order under the Rule of 1978 can be studied. The focus of the program is independent adult learning and distance education for those interested in the Franciscan life.

Goals:

The main goal of the Institute for Contemporary Franciscan Life is to provide a context in which an integration of Franciscan sources and life experience can take place. Franciscan commitment, contemporary culture, Catholic Franciscan traditions, and the personal background of the adult learner are integral aspects of this context. The program seeks to broaden the adult learner's educational and spiritual base. TheĀ Institute for Contemporary Franciscan Life focus is on the integration of the educational, spiritual, and formative aspects of Franciscanism.

Objectives:

  • To provide educational and spiritual formation for Secular Franciscans, Religious of the Franciscan family, and other interested individuals

  • To utilize Catholic Franciscan higher education in the development of Franciscan education and formation

  • To serve as a model for collaboration among the members of the Secular Franciscan Order and theĀ Institute for Contemporary Franciscan Life sponsored by Saint Francis University, a Catholic Franciscan institution of higher education

  • To allow for the dissemination of Franciscan educational and formational programs

  • To encourage Secular Franciscans in their roles and responsibilities as spiritual leaders in contemporary society

  • To continue to develop and participate in the vital reciprocity among Franciscans
