University Mourns Loss of Beloved Faculty Member

University Communications & Marketing | 04/15/2024

Note: University President Father Malachi Van Tassell shared this message with the campus community in an email on April 3:

"With profound sadness, I share the news of the passing of our dear colleague, Dr. Aniruddha Bose, Associate Professor of History, on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

As an Assistant Professor, Dr. Bose joined our community on August 19, 2013, after growing up in Calcutta and Mumbai and completing his graduate work at Northeastern University and Boston College. He has written two books, Class Conflict and Modernization in India: The Raj and the Calcutta Waterfront and Shunting the Nation: Indian Railway Workers and the Most Tumultuous Decade in Modern Indian History. As Ani wrote, "I strongly believe in writing histories of ordinary people who, working together, can change the world." Dr. Bose has served on various University committees, including co-facilitating Multicultural Week/International Solidarity Fest and serving on the Core RE-Envision Task Force. Ani was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018 and awarded tenure in 2020.

Aniruddha's innovative program of presenting historical precedent for present-day problems made his students eminently marketable in today's business job opportunities.

Even through serious illness, Ani has dedicated himself to continuing to write and teach. His impact on the lives of many students is undeniable, and he firmly believed that the world is fundamentally a positive place and that History, if taught properly, can be a great source of hope—because, while there are, to be sure, many examples of humans treating one another badly in History, there are many more of humans doing all sorts of wonderful things together and for one another.

During this challenging time, we pray for healing for Ani's family and loved ones.  Please join me in praying for the repose of the soul of Dr. Aniruddha Bose. "
