Chemistry department receives American Chemical Society approval

April 4, 2014

The Saint Francis University chemistry department has earned approval from the American Chemical Society (ACS) to grant ACS-certified degrees in chemistry. ACS, the largest scientific society in the world, sets standards for undergraduate degrees in chemistry, and only departments that meet their standards can offer "ACS-certified" degrees.

University President Fr. Gabriel Zeis, T.O.R., was pleased to receive notification from the ACS’ Committee on Professional Training that the chemistry department had successfully completed a three-year certification process. He commended the department on their hard work throughout the application period.

Over the years, the chemistry program at Saint Francis University has become highly competitive as a result of successful students moving into prestigious graduate school placements or gaining sought-after industry positions shortly after graduation. “The ability to offer the ACS-certified chemistry degree further validates the level of quality that the faculty and students have already set as a benchmark for the program,” said Rose Clark, chair of the department.

One of the key components to the program’s success is the emphasis on undergraduate research. Students are encouraged to partner with faculty on research projects as early as their freshman year. Saint Francis chemistry majors and their faculty have presented at national conferences, worked on grant projects exceeding $1.3 million in external funding, and have taken part in service projects that have changed lives.

Another plus for the department is its move in August 2013 into specially designed dedicated space on the top floor of the university’s new 70,000 square-foot Science Center. The space includes specialized instrumentation rooms, chem lab and classroom facilities, the Science Outreach Center (home to R.O.C.K.-Rural Chemistry Outreach for Kids), and a student-zone  for chemistry majors.
