Dr. Kirk Weixel, professor of English, will be broadcast on WPSU-FM (91.5 and 106.7 FM) reviewing critically-acclaimed novelist Jennifer Haigh's book of short stories, News from Heaven. The review will be broadcast twice: Thursday, April 25, at 5:45 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, at 9:00 a.m. on 91.5 and 106.7 FM.
Haigh visited Saint Francis in February and read from News from Heaven. She was born in Barnesboro, Pa., the granddaughter of a coal miner. Her latest collection of short stories and her 2005 novel Baker Towers take her back to her life in west-central Pennsylvania as they chronicle life in Bakerton, Pa., a coal-mining company town that went from booming prosperity to sharp decline.
All of the stories in News from Heaven revisit coal country, spanning about half a century to show how much the place has changed. The book was recently featured in the New York Times, receiving a glowing review.
