Dr. Timmons presents paper at employment relations in healthcare conference

March 17, 2014

Dr. Edward Timmons, associate professor of economics, presented his paper "More Battles Among Licensed Occupations: Estimating the Effects of Scope of Practice on the Chiropractic, Physical Therapist, and Physician Labor Market" at the Employment Relations in Healthcare Conference at Rutgers University on March 14 and and 15.

The conference was co-sponsored by the new Center for Work and Health at Rutgers University and the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The paper empirically explores the ongoing "turf battle" between physicians, chiropractors, and PTs in the $300 billion back and neck pain market. The paper was co-written with Jason Hockenberry (Emory University) and Christine Piette Durrance (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) and was one of only 26 papers selected for presentation at the conference. The multidisciplinary conference featured scholars from across the US, Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

The paper is currently under review for inclusion in a special issue of Industrial and Labor Relations Review.
