  • A Message from the President Father Gabriel

Father GabrielMore than 800 years after his death, Saint Francis of Assisi continues to influence the lives of countless people around the world. He has crossed the boundaries of time and space, he remains loved and respected by people of every religious tradition, and his ideals and values have stood the test of time. His spirit also remains alive in this portion of Pennsylvania and at this small college which bears his name.

Founded in 1847, Saint Francis University is the oldest Franciscan college in the United States and one of the first Catholic colleges established in this country. Our founders, six Franciscan friars from Ireland, came to Loretto over a century and a half ago to establish a school with the threefold educational purpose of spiritual guidance, formal academic preparation, and community service. The vision and purpose of these friars stood the test of time during the 19th and 20th centuries and will remain the same for the Saint Francis of the 21st century.

Although our founders could never have imagined that our message would travel instantly through cyberspace and that we could communicate so easily with millions of people in this country and throughout the world, the first cabin our friars built in Loretto was a place of dreams and promises. Their dreams were clear enough to inspire others to follow. The institution they sacrificed to build remains a place of promises fulfilled and of promises still to be realized.

So whether you are a student looking for a place to pursue your college studies, or an alumnus or alumna interested in what's happening at your Alma Mater, or a potential donor searching for an institution worthy of your investment, or just a friend surfing the net in your spare moments, we welcome you to our web site and invite you to learn more about Saint Francis University.

In the words of Saint Francis's favorite greeting - May the Lord give you peace.

    - Fr. Gabriel Zeis
