Mr. Bret Thoman OFS
School: Arts & Letters
Bret Thoman has been a Secular Franciscan since 2006, when he was professed together with his wife, Katia. Bret is a licensed commercial pilot and has worked as a flight instructor, cargo pilot, and airline pilot. He has a master’s degree in Italian from Middlebury College in Vermont, as well as a BA from the University of Georgia in foreign languages. He is fluent in Italian, conversant in Spanish and French, and reads Latin. He has worked in a business school teaching English as a second language and Italian to adults, as well as translating Italian. He spent one year as part of a team offering parish missions in the Archdiocese of New York.
In 2004 Bret and Katia began a ministry organizing and accompanying Franciscan pilgrimages to Assisi and throughout Italy; it is now their full-time job. They divide their year between Georgia and Assisi. They have two small children, Claremarie and Iacopo, whom they homeschool. When he is in town, Bret fills in as formation director at his SFO fraternity. Bret has written one book telling the stories of Francis and Clare with a concentration on the Franciscan places in central Italy, titled, The Road to Peace in Assisi. He has a deep knowledge of the Franciscan history and presence in central Italy. Bret strives towards a Christian discipleship modeled after “lesserness” left to us by Francis and Clare. He enjoys the company of his family, hiking or riding his mountain bike anywhere not on asphalt, reading, and just being himself.
