Justin P. Long EIT
Academic Department: Engineering
Graduation Year: 2009
"After graduating from SFU's 3+2 Engineering Program, I continued my studies at Penn State University. In 2011 I graduated with a BA in Engineering from SFU and a BS in Civil/Structural Engineering from Penn State. Passing my FE Licensing exam, I began working as a Field Engineer for Clark Concrete, a subsidiary of Clark Construction.
Currently, I work as a consulting structural engineer at Smislova, Kehnemui and Associates, P.A. in the Washington, DC metro area. As a consultant within our Repair and Restoration division, I help aid clients in developing and executing cost-effective strategies to meet the structural repair, restoration and/or preventative maintenance challenges associated with aging and deteriorating structures. Such challenges involve complex engineering and problem solving to balance several key factors such as repair and operational costs, anticipated service life and public safety. Each day I take part in such aspects of repair engineering like structural/remedial design, building assessments, strengthening/stabilization design, waterproofing consultation, construction cost estimating, project monitoring/oversight and preparation of contract documents and repair specifications. My career offers the best of both worlds with lots of time spent in the field away from my desk as well as in the office."
"The educational foundation in Mathematics, Physics and Engineering I received from the Saint Francis University 3+2 program is the keystone to my success, not only as a practicing engineer today, but especially during my continuing studies at Penn State. The most valuable aspect of the educational instruction at SFU, and 3+2 program as a whole, is the individual attention and dedication to the student. Such a deep, foundational understanding of the fundamentals is what made me successful as an SFU Alum."
