Using a Gas Chromatograph: Identifying Unknown Compounds

    Age: 9th-12th graders
    Time: Approximately 1.5 hours
Objectives: In this experiment, you will

    • Familiarize yourself with a very basic gas chromatography instrument
    • Measure and analyze the retention time of each of six substances as they pass through a Vernier Mini GC.
    • Measure and analyze the retention time of an unknown mixture of the substances.
    • Identify the substances present in the unknown mixture based on retention times.

Reserve the Mini GCs and/or materials for Identifying Unknown Compounds module.

    Verification of Esterification Lab

    Age: 9th-12th graders
    Time: Approximately 2 hours
Objectives: In this experiment, you will

    • Familiarize yourself with a very basic gas chromatography instrument
    • Conduct an esterification reaction to produce ethyl acetate.
    • Measure and analyze the GC retentions time of the reactants and products involved in synthesizing ethyl acetate.
    • Measure and analyze the GC retentions time of the reaction mixture to confirm the production of ethyl acetate.

Reserve the Mini GCs and/or materials for Verification of Esterification module.
