Wind Energy Seminar and Expo

The Saint Francis University Renewable Energy Center will hold a wind seminar and expo on May 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the campus of Saint Francis University in Loretto.

The event will be geared towards helping agricultural producers and small businesses determine if a wind project may be feasible for their operations.

During the seminar, attendees will learn about the resource, technology, pros and cons, and financial aspects, as well as what to look for when choosing an installer. Industry representatives and related organizations will be on hand to meet with attendees in an expo environment.

Topics will include site assessment, sizing, equipment, installation, permitting, safety and more.  Small turbines, as well as larger wind farm development, will be discussed.

The campus’ 2.5 kw small wind turbine will be examined as an example project.  An optional tour of a local wind farm will be included, allowing another firsthand look at how the resource can be used.

Wind energy has been employed in the United States for hundreds of years for such tasks as sailing ships and pumping water and more recently for generating electricity.

The event is the second in a series of seminars to be organized by the Renewable Energy Center in 2013, each focusing on one of the five prevalent renewable energy forms in Pennsylvania. Future events will cover geothermal, micro-hydro, and solar energies.

Utilizing renewable energy can help rural Pennsylvanians by reducing energy costs, reducing risk, and providing a revenue stream through electrical sales to utilities.
