24th Annual Science Day 2017

More than 530 high school students from 30 local schools celebrated science on the Saint Francis University campus for the 24th Annual Science Day event. Dr. Pete Skoner , Professor of Physics and Science Day organizer, started the morning off with the inspiring story of Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman and the “Become That Someone” theme embraced by the University. New this year, Dr. Skoner invited students to “Become That Scientist” on Instagram throughout the day to share their science day experiences. The project to build a Saint Francis University Tiny Classroom is officially a reality! The Tiny Classroom Big Impact project, currently under construction, will provide hands-on, renewable energy education for SFU students and community members in central and southwestern Pennsylvania. A year ago, the Institute for Energy dreamed an idea to construct a tiny mobile classroom. They envisioned the classroom would utilize renewable energy and serve as a teaching tool about sustainability and power technologies for communities in the region. Saint Francis University star Lorenzo Jerome has been signed to the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. Lorenzo is set to become the first Red Flash player to play in the NFL since Joe Restic (Philadelphia Eagles) in 1952. “We have an agreement on a three-year deal,” Lorenzo told the Tribune Democrat . He is headed to San Francisco this week to meet with coaches and finalize the deal. During the NFL draft , Lorenzo and his SFU family were on pins and needles. Saint Francis is on the brink of sending its first Red Flash player to the NFL since 1945, thanks to Lorenzo Jerome. The Criminal Justice major is graduating next weekend with his fellow seniors, but it's his plans this weekend that are sure to rack his nerves. Lorenzo is eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft in Philadelphia, and is hoping be picked up by Day 3. Allison Rohrs receives Energy Leadership Award

Allison Rohrs, director for the Institute for Energy at Saint Francis University, recently received the Women in Energy Leadership Award by the Pittsburgh Business Times . Rohrs was one of 26 women in the region to receive the 2016 award. The honorees were selected by a panel of industry experts and honored at an event and in a special edition of the Pittsburgh Business Times in October. Rohrs has served as the director for the Institute for Energy at Saint Francis for nearly four years. Biology Alumnus Nikki Nastasi becomes bone marrow donor

Nikki Nastasi, a 2011 Saint Francis University Biology graduate, who is a stem cell lab specialist at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for the bone marrow transplant team, recently became a bone marrow donor herself. Prior to her studying biology at Saint Francis, Nikki had done a mouth swab in 2006 through Be The Match , operated by the national marrow donor program. It wasn’t until after she began her career at Children’s hospital that she was contacted as a donor match. Her bone marrow transplant goes to a 3 year old boy with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare blood and bone marrow
