Andrew Tinker accepts DAISY Award

On November 15, 2024, Andrew Tinker, a junior Saint Francis University BSN student, was recognized with the prestigious Student DAISY Award during a surprise ceremony at UPMC Altoona. This national honor celebrates nursing students who demonstrate extraordinary compassion, care, and commitment to their patients and their families. Andrew’s exceptional contribution to patient care was highlighted by his nominator, a UPMC registered nurse, who witnessed his remarkable dedication firsthand.

Andrew’s recognition stemmed from his outstanding performance on October 10, 2024, during a labor and delivery case that was as unique as it was challenging. The patient, who arrived in active labor, sought an unmedicated birth experience and brought a lively sense of humor to the room. Andrew immediately adapted to the patient’s energy, fostering a lighthearted and comforting atmosphere.

According to the nominator, Andrew’s ability to connect with the patient and her fiancé went beyond standard expectations:

“Andrew got to know the patient and her fiancé and kept the room lighthearted and fun throughout the entire process. After he had left, the patient recognized him time and time again and stated that ‘he will be a great nurse someday.’”

Andrew exemplified UPMC’s core values of Dignity and Respect as well as Caring and Listening. His efforts to truly understand and engage with the patient’s story allowed him to provide personalized, compassionate care. Beyond ensuring the patient’s safety, Andrew went the extra mile to build trust and comfort, both crucial in such an intimate and emotional setting.

Andrew’s ability to remain attentive and proactive throughout the delivery process was another key highlight of his nomination:

“Andrew also took on the value of Responsibility and Integrity by going above and beyond what he was asked, by constantly checking in on the patient and taking the time to talk with her and her support person.”

What is the Student DAISY Award?

The Student DAISY Award was created to recognize nursing students who exemplify exceptional care, compassion, and empathy in their practice. It acknowledges students who understand that nursing is not just about medical tasks but also about treating each patient as a whole person—emotionally, mentally, and physically.

About the DAISY Foundation

The   DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 to honor J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. Inspired by the extraordinary care Patrick received from his nurses, his family created the foundation to celebrate nursing excellence. The acronym DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.  The foundation’s Student DAISY Award continues this legacy by honoring future nurses like Andrew, whose dedication and compassion inspire trust and healing in the patients they serve.
