Endowed Chairs at Saint Francis University
Endowed Chairs serve multiple needs at Saint Francis University including maintaining a faculty of distinction, encouraging scholarship among faculty and students, providing for visiting lecturers, granting financial aid to students, and generally enhancing scholarship and the teaching process.
THE JOSEPH AND MARGUERITE DiSEPIO CHAIR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Established in 2001 by Saint Francis University alumni Joseph '58 and Marguerite (Scharpf) '60 DiSepio, the endowment is committed to raising the level of excellence within the computer science department. The endowment funds faculty development, a distinguished lecture series, student internship programs and research and practices in the field of security and information assurance.
THE DR. ALBERT A. ZANZUCCKI CHAIR IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Established in 2006 by Saint Francis alumni John S. '64 and Sheila (Widmer) '65 Connors, the endowment is named in honor of Dr. Albert Zanzuccki, professor emeritus and former chairman of the business administration department. The endowment is used to attract outstanding senior scholars and recognized business leaders to lecture and teach at the University, honor a distinguished Saint Francis faculty member, fund faculty and student research programs and other purposes as advised by the chair commitee.
Selection Criteria for Endowed Scholarships
In order to apply for the following endowed scholarships, students must complete the Saint Francis University Application for Admission and be accepted to the institution. Students must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually. No further action is needed. The Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Admissions forms a committee to determine eligible recipients for endowed scholarships. If you are selected for an endowed scholarship, you will be contacted by the Office of Financial Aid and the Advancement Office.
SAINT FRANCIS UNIVERSITY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
A number of named scholarships and awards are granted to students according to established guidelines.
The following list identifies the permanent scholarship and award funds, their donors and purposes.
ACT 101 PROGRAM ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Established by an anonymous donor to the junior or senior member of the Act 101 Program with the highest Q.P.A.
JOHN AND MILLIE ADAMUCCI SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1997 by William Adamucci '66 in memory of his parents, John and Millie Adamucci. This scholarship will be used to recruit, retain and support persons of color who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled full-time in the University's Shields School of Business. The students will maintain the scholarship for up to four academic years as long as they remain in good academic standing.
JOHN P. "JAY" AUSES '70 AND CHRISTINE (WANK) AUSES '70 SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT IN CHEMISTRY AND ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Established in 2018 by Jay and Christine (Wank) Auses. Scholarships will be awarded to Saint Francis University students who are entering their junior year of study. Recipients will be either Chemistry majors or Elementary Education majors with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. Each scholarship is for a two-year period. In the unlikely event that there are no eligible Chemistry or Elementary Education candidates, the scholarship may be awarded to another Science or Education major. Until fully funded, the scholarship will alternate between disciplines every two years. For example, if the inaugural recipient is an Elementary Education major, the next recipient will be a Chemistry major and so forth.
BALTRUS-VAICENAITE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2024 by Dr. John Baltrus '80 and his wife Jurate Vaicenaite. This scholarship will be awarded to at least one student, an incoming full-time freshman with verified financial need. The recipient(s) will be students enrolled in an academic program related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The recipient(s) will maintain the award for no more than four years, while maintaining an overall minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. If any recipients fall below this requirement, the scholarship will be offered to new first-year student(s).
FATHER GILBERT BARTH, T.O.R., SCHOLARSHIP
Established in March 1990 by Beatrice Root of San Antonio, Texas, in honor of her brother, Father Gilbert Barth, T.O.R. The scholarship is awarded annually to students who fulfill standard admissions requirements by the University scholarship committee.
EDWARD R. BATEMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship in memory of Edward R. Bateman, Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, a Saint Francis student who died in 1968. Fund established by his family.
DR. STEPHEN J. BEDOSKY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1985 by Dr. Bedosky's widow, Margaretta. Awards will be made on the basis of need and academic merit.
REVEREND ANTHONY BERHELY SCHOLARSHIP OR GRANT
Established in 1975 by the late Michael Bedosky of Binghamton, NY, formerly of Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, in honor of the former pastor of St. John's Parish, Barnesboro. Preference is given to students of the Prince of Peace Parish which is a consolidation of St. John's and other parishes in the Northern Cambria area.
THE RAYMOND BERNER SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH/COMMUNICATIONS Established in 1992 by an anonymous donor in honor of Mr. Berner, who was a member of the University's faculty from 1956 until his death in January 1993. Restricted to English/Communications majors; based primarily on financial need and good academic standing.
BERWIND CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP
Established in December 1974 by the Berwind Corporation of Philadelphia, the scholarship is awarded annually to a needy and worthy student selected by the scholarship committee.
STEVEN L. BOBB AWARD
This award is given to the Resident Assistant who best exemplifies the ideals of the Resident Assistant Program and exhibits the same qualities that Steve possessed - family focused, committed to goals and academics, insightful and a person many consider a friend. Steve was a 1984 graduate who lost his life in 1986 due to a drunk driver.
ANNE SLOAN BORLAND AWARD ENDOWMENT
Established in 2002 through a gift from the estate of Anne Sloan Borland. A member of the Wolf Family of Altoona, Ms. Borland was a lifelong supporter of education, the arts, libraries and reading programs. Awards will be made to students enrolled in graduate programs through a competitive process.
JULIAN BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1978 in memory of Julian Brown, a 1951 graduate of Saint Francis. The scholarship is awarded annually.
GEORGE H. BURALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2003 through a gift from the estate of Theresa Josephine Burall in memory of her husband. Awards are made based on need.
JAMES P. BURKE SCHOLARSHIP IN PHILOSOPHY OR NURSING
Established in 1992 by an anonymous donor in honor of James P. Burke, former department chairman of sociology and philosophy who retired in 1990 after 42 years of teaching at Saint Francis. Mr. Burke died in 2001. Restricted to philosophy or nursing majors; based primarily on financial need and good academic standing.
FRANK & MARY M. CALANDRA SCHOLARSHIP
Established by Jack Calandra and Frank Calandra, Jr., in honor of their parents, Frank, Sr., and Mary M. Calandra. Preference is given to students majoring in business administration.
JACK CALANDRA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023 by the family of Jack Calandra, long-time friend and benefactor to Saint Francis University. This scholarship will be awarded to incoming first-year students from Cambria or Blair County who are enrolled in the Shields School of Business. The students must exhibit a verified need for financial aid. The recipients will maintain the scholarship for a maximum of four years, contingent upon a minimum 3.0 GPA.
LUCY M. (SORIANO) CALHOUN SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Established by the late Ted J. Long of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in memory of his mother, Lucy M. (Soriano) Calhoun. Awarded to qualified upperclass students who reside in Blair, Bedford, Centre, Clearfield and Huntingdon counties.
FATHER THOMAS CALLAN POETRY CONTEST
Established in 2018 by Paul Martin, Class of 1962. This contest aims to celebrate Father Thomas Callan’s love of literature and poetry.
CAMPUS MINISTRY AWARD
This award is presented to a person who serves as a role model for the University's Catholic Franciscan Heritage.
GUNARD BERRY CARLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established on December 6, 1971, by the Gunard Berry Carlson Memorial Foundation, Inc. This fund as established permits the scholarship committee to make awards to academically qualified students.
GUNARD BERRY CARLSON/SAINT FRANCIS UNIVERSITY CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
This contest is open to all Saint Francis University undergraduates. Students may submit written work in any of four categories: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and essay writing. Cash prizes and tuition credit is awarded to the top four writing entries. In addition, a cash prize is awarded to honorable mentions. Students may also submit visual artwork in four categories: painting, sculpture, photography and sketch. The top visual entry receives a cash prize, as well as honorable mention entries. All winning writing and visual artwork will be published in Tapestries, the campus literary magazine.

Established in 1998 by business administration department alumni of the Class of 1950.
CLASS OF 1951 AND 1952 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION SCHOLARSHIP Established in 2002 by business administration department alumni of the Classes of 1951 and 1952.
CLASS OF 1959 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1994 by business administration department alumni of the Class of 1959 at their 35th class reunion. Restricted to students in the business administration department. Based primarily on financial need and good academic standing.
CLASS OF 1960 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1999 by business administration department alumni of the Class of 1960.
CLASS OF 1961 HERITAGE AWARD
Established in December 2022 by James Salony, Class of 1961. This Award will support a current first-year student who has maintained good academic standing and has a substantiated need for financial aid. Preference will be given to direct descendants of members of the Class of 1961. The award will be bestowed to a new student each year at the annual President’s Awards Convocation.
CLASS OF 1982 AWARD
Established in 2015 by members of the Class of 1982. This award recognizes an outstanding student athlete who is a second- semester, freshman business major, active in service, with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0.
DR. JOHN COLEMAN SCHOLARSHIP IN HISTORY Established in 1994 by an anonymous donor in honor of Dr. John Coleman, professor emeritus of history at Saint Francis. Based primarily on financial need and good academic standing. Restricted to history majors.
CHRISTOPHER A. COLLIER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
Established in 2017 by family and friends in memory of Christopher who graduated from Saint Francis in 1975. This award will be conferred to a full-time student, regardless of major, who attended Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, NJ (first preference); Lancaster Catholic High School, Lancaster, PA (second preference); Archbishop Wood High School, Warminster, PA (third preference); any other accredited Catholic secondary school (fourth preference and must be enrolled in a humanities major). The recipient must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. It is the wishes of the donor that the award be used for the costs of attending Saint Francis University.
CONNORS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT Established in 1996 by John S. '64 and Sheila W. (Widmer) Connors '65 and the late John F. Connors and his widow, Mary (Shields) Connors. The fund permits the scholarship committee to make awards to students majoring in the business administration department.
TOM AND KAY CONNORS SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2017 in memory of Tom Connors '62. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who graduated from a Catholic high school and is enrolled in the Shields School of Business. The Connors family prefers the scholarship benefit an orphan, a child of a single parent, a foster child, or a child raised by his/her grandparent(s). The family also wishes for the recipient to apply the Franciscan values instilled at the University towards their business career/workplace.
LUCY BENDER COOPER AND STEPHEN AUGUSTINE COOPER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1994 by Dr. and Mrs. Leo K. Cooper in memory of Dr. Cooper's mother and father. Dr. Cooper, who died in 1998, was a pioneer in the field of orthopedic surgery and a member of the Class of 1926.
ANTHONY J. AND MARYANN L. CORAY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2011 by Joseph Coray '83 in honor of his parents, Anthony J. and MaryAnn L. Coray. The scholarship is restricted to students in a humanities major who have achieved superior academic records, and who have demonstrated financial need.
EUGENE A. CREANY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1975 through a fund established by Judge Eugene A. Creany of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Judge Creany died in 2001. Preference given to students from the local area.
ANGELA (BIONAZ) DAMIN, R.N. NURSING AWARD Established in 2015 by the late Dean Damin in memory of his wife, Angela. The award is given to a full-time freshman student enrolled in the nursing program from Cambria County, with a second preference given to students from the local region. The recipient, chosen by nursing faculty, will be considered the top freshman nursing major from the Cambria County/regional area with demonstrated financial need.
DR. BETTY DAVIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1998 by Sr. Alice Louise Davis, RSM, in memory of her sister, Dr. Betty Davis, former professor of elementary education at Saint Francis. Preference is given to elementary education, education or nursing majors who reside in Cambria or adjoining counties.
THE BENJAMIN J. DELOZIER AWARD FOR GENEROSITY
Established in March 2014. This award recognizes and honors the life and legacy of Benjamin J. Delozier. Benjamin earned a Master of Education degree from Saint Francis University in 2007. This award acknowledges students who display acts of compassion, generosity and benevolence without regard for themselves, as Benjamin did during his lifetime. The recipient must be enrolled as an education major in good academic standing. Candidates will be nominated by a full-time undergrade faculty member of the Education Department.
THE HERBERT J. AND MILDRED L. DE MARRAIS ENDOWMENT
Established in 2002 by Mr. and Mrs. de Marrais for general purposes. Mr. de Marrais served as a University trustee from 1989 to 2001.
PAUL DESKEVICH OUTSTANDING MATHEMATICS STUDENT AWARD
Established in 2018 by Daniel Abramowicz, Ph.D. ’79. This award will be given to a promising mathematics major completing their freshman or sophomore year. The recipient will have demonstrated a high proficiency in the study of mathematics and displays a particular ability and joy for learning mathematics. The award may only be used for University expenses, i.e., tuition, room & board, fees, etc.
JOSEPH AND MARGUERITE DiSEPIO SCHOLARSHIP IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Established in 2007, and funded by The Joseph & Marguerite DiSepio Chair in Computer Science. The scholarship is restricted to a computer science major and is based on academic performance.
MARGUERITE AND JOSEPH J. DiSEPIO SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1998 by Marguerite, Class of 1960, and Joseph J. DiSepio, Class of 1958, of Jamesburg, New Jersey. Restricted to business administration majors who are in good academic standing. Preference will be given to graduates of Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia.
THE DITZ FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2022 by the Ditz family, in memory of Mark Ditz ’81 and Anthony “Tony” Ditz ’79. This scholarship will be awarded to a student entering his or her first year. The student will be selected on merit alone. His or her high school grade point average must be 3.5 or higher. Additionally, the recipient must maintain an annual 3.0-grade point average and remain in good standing to maintain the scholarship for each undergraduate year.
DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY ALUMNI AWARD
Founded by the DPT Class of 2006 as follows: “Awarded by a vote of the graduating class to the member whose personal initiative and character most fostered class spirit and cohesiveness during the course of professional studies.”
REV. PATRICK DONAHOE, T.O.R. SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023 by the friends and family of Fr. Patrick Donahoe, T.O.R. ’70, a Franciscan friar who passed way in 2015. This scholarship will be awarded to one student, an incoming full-time freshman admitted into the University’s Alta Via program with a verified need for financial aid. The recipient will maintain the scholarship for a maximum of four years, contingent upon good academic standing.
SUSAN DREYER MCCORMICK SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2024 in Memory of Susan Dreyer McCormick ’75, who passed away in 2024. This scholarship will be awarded to a freshman majoring in Elementary Education with a GPA of 3.0 or better and demonstrated financial need. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to retain the scholarship. If the current recipient does not maintain a 3.0 GPA, a new student will be chosen.
FR. ALBERT DRIESCH/AVIAN TECHNOLOGIES AWARD
This is an endowed award given to a chemistry major who has completed organic chemistry I and organic chemistry II in the year preceding the award. The basis of this award is: highest grade point for both courses and overall class performance.
DR. MICHAEL DUDRA MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
Established in 1986 by Dr. Dudra's widow, Mrs. Daria Dudra, and alumni of the Graduate School of Industrial Relations to assist students enrolled in the Graduate School of Human Resource Management/Industrial Relations. Dr. Dudra, who was the first director of the IR program, died in 1982. Mrs. Dudra died in 1994. Preference in the award process will be given to graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to a career in teaching industrial relations at the college or university level.
EAST COAST VOLLEYBALL MEN'S VOLLEYBALL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Established in 2024 by East Coast Volleyball, Inc., a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for student-athletes participating in men's and women's volleyball. This scholarship will be chosen by the head coach of the men's volleyball program in consultation with the University's athletic department administration. Recipient(s) must demonstrate academic achievement and maintain a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
EAST COAST VOLLEYBALL WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Established in 2024 by East Coast Volleyball, Inc., a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for student-athletes participating in men's and women's volleyball. This scholarship will be chosen by the head coach of the women's volleyball program in consultation with the University's athletic department administration. Recipient(s) must demonstrate academic achievement and maintain a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
LAURIN EDWARDS MEMORIAL AWARD
Laurin Edwards was a physician assistant student at Saint Francis University who passed away due to a tragic event prior to the start of her sophomore year. This award is given to a sophomore PA major who is in good academic standing and shows positive contributions to the University or through community service. Selection is not based on need; however, preference may be given to students who receive limited financial aid and scholarship support.
ANN EPPARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AND CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIP
Established by Bud Shuster, Member of Congress (Ret.) and member of the Saint Francis University Board of Trustees. The fund will offer scholarships for summer Congressional internships to qualified Saint Francis University students. Scholarships will be annually awarded to deserving political science or history majors with preference for young women from Pennsylvania.
JOSEPH EREVELLES BIOLOGY PRE-MEDICINE ANNUAL AWARD
Established in 2022 by Dr. Winston and Dr. Christine (Koneski) Erevelles ’86, in memory of their son, Joseph. This award will benefit students enrolled in the Biology/Pre-Med program in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) with funds to support the preparation for the cost of medical school admission tests, application fees for medical schools, and travel for interviews.
FAHRINGER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2018 by the Fahringer Foundation. This scholarship will be awarded to a student from Cambria County in Pennsylvania who meets the standard admissions requirements and has demonstrated financial need. A new student will be chosen every year.
CARLO AND JENNIE FALCHINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1979 by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Falchini of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, in memory of Mr. Falchini's parents. The fund permits the scholarship committee to make awards to deserving students.
DR. BARBARA M. FALK SCHOLARSHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY
Established in 2005 by Dr. Falk, a 1962 graduate of Saint Francis. It is preferred that the scholarship be awarded annually to a female student in her senior year of study with a career goal becoming a clinical psychologist.
LEONARD S. AND MARY E. FIORE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2001 by the Fiore family of Altoona, PA, in honor of their parents, Leonard S. and Mary E. Fiore. Preference will be given to graduates of Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona. Graduates of Bishop McCort in Johnstown or Bishop Carroll in Ebensburg may also be considered.
FRITZ-RAYMOND ENGLISH HONORS AWARD
Established in 2014 by Tom & Tracy Fritz of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This award will be given to one student who meets the following criteria: an outstanding freshman English Honors Program student with GPA of 3.5 or better in their first semester and demonstrated, exceptional writing skills. If no student meets the above qualifications, the award may be given to a freshman English major with at least a 3.5 GPA or a freshman Honors Program student with exceptional writing skills with GPA of 3.5 or better. The award may be applied to tuition/text book/educational purchases, or some other combination thereof.
BEVERLY FRYE AND MARY FRANCES CROKE EXCELLENCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AWARD
Established in 2018 by Randy and Barbara Frye. This annual award will be presented to a current sophomore or junior early childhood/elementary major (with a junior as first preference) who has achieved a strong record of academic achievement (preferred 3.5 GPA or higher). The awardee will have engaged in campus service, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities, while displaying high potential as a future educator along with high moral character. Students with demonstrated financial need will be given priority preference.
WILLIAM B. AND PATRICIA L. FURLONG UPPERCLASSMAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Furlong Endowment, established by the William B. Furlong family, friends, and former students of Dr. Furlong, recognizes Dr. and Mrs. Furlong’s life-long commitment to academic excellence, peace and social justice. Dr. Furlong was an English professor at the University for over 30 years. Bachelor of Arts students majoring in either English, History, or Philosophy with an excellent academic record and a documented community service record are eligible to receive the award.
GALLITZIN AREA ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
Established in August of 2017 by the Gallitzin Area Alumni Association in honor of Dr. Arthur Julian '49, professor emeritus of education. Specifically, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a resident of Gallitzin, Amsbry, Ashville or Coupon area and demonstrates financial need.
DR. RHEA GAUNT AWARD IN EDUCATION
Established in honor of Dr. Rhea Gaunt, Professor of Education at Saint Francis University, who passed away in 2005. This award, established by Dr. Frances Boyd and Mr. Sean Dalrymple, son of Dr. Rhea Gaunt, honors Dr. Gaunt's dedication to her profession and to her students. This award will be granted to a Saint Francis University education major entering the student teaching semester of the teacher preparation program. The Education Department faculty will choose the recipient based on academic excellence and financial need.
HENRY GEMINO SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2001 by Francis P. Gemino '72 of Rockville Centre, NY, in honor of his father, Henry Gemino. The scholarship is awarded to deserving students by the University scholarship committee.
FATHER CHARLES GINOCCHIO SCHOLARSHIP
Established by the University in 1983 to honor Father Charles Ginocchio, former professor and mathematics department chairperson.
MARTIN AND JANE S. GOLDHABER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1994 by Mr. and Mrs. Goldhaber to promote the men's Division I basketball program.
KEVIN GRODZKI SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2021 by Kevin Grodzki '77. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student-athlete enrolled in the Shields School of Business who has attained sophomore status or above while maintaining good academic standing. The student must have verified need for financial aid. The student-athlete chose need not be the best athlete or a stellar student, but will be that person that makes everything around them better because of their high values, standards and ideals, their commitment to excellence and the desire to make everything around them better. A new recipient will be chosen each year.
GUNTHER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2020 by Carolyn Gunther from the Class of 1968. This scholarship will be awarded to a female, upperclassman, commuter student with financial need.
ROBERT L. AND JEAN HAGERICH SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2003 by Robert L. and Jean Hagerich of Johnstown, PA. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students.
BOB HAHN MEMORIAL GOLF SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2007 by family and friends of Bob Hahn, long-time men's golf coach and Immergrun Golf Club professional, who passed away in March 2007.
ALICE HAINES SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION
Established in December 1970 by Alice Haines of Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, a teacher in the public schools of Northern Cambria County and a friend of Saint Francis University.
JOSHUA PAUL HANLON AWARD
Established in 2010 by William J. Hanlon in memory of his son, who passed away at 20 years of age due to an illness. This award will be given to a sophomore, junior, or senior engineering or science major with a Q.P.A. of 3.25 or higher and a graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School.
KAYLEE HARFORD UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD IN CHEMISTRY

Established in 1989 by the family of Dr. E. Clark Ingoldsby in his memory. Dr. Ingoldsby, a 1932 graduate of Saint Francis, received his doctor of medicine degree in 1936 and served 42 years as a physician in the Altoona area. The scholarship is restricted to residents of Cresson, Pennsylvania, first, then to residents of Cambria or Blair County who are in need of financial aid.
JACK OF OUR HEARTS
Established, November of 2020. This award is to celebrate and honor the life of Jack Grassmyer. Jack was the son of Cassie and Jim Grassmyer. Jack was diagnosed with Miller-Dieker's Lissencephaly Sydnrome. Jack spent 8 years of his life facing many challenges, but his strength and bravery showed no limits. Jack often visited campus with his mother to help educate and prepare future teachers, occupational therapists, and nurses. Jack lives on in the spirit of all. The following students are eligible: Education majors and Secondary Education concentration students, OT students pursuing an education minor or future career in a school-based setting, and nursing students pursuing a career in pediatric nursing. Established in 2013 by Doris P. James, in memory of her husband James, a 1939 graduate of Saint Francis. This scholarship shall be given to no more than two incoming full-time freshman students who have achieved academic success and have demonstrated financial need. The student(s) shall retain the scholarship for up to four years as long as they remain in good academic standing, otherwise, the scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman. Preference for the scholarship will be given to a male student, without regard to race, religious preference or ethnicity.

Established in May of 2018 by the family and friends of Mike Jandora. Specifically, this scholarship will be awarded to one student, an incoming freshman, who has demonstrated financial need and exhibits a well-rounded, service-oriented background. Preference will be given to a student majoring in social work. The recipient will retain the scholarship for up to four years providing he/she maintains a 3.2 GPA.

Established in 2023 by family and friends. Dr. John Karduck, a faculty member in the Saint Francis University Physician Assistant Sciences department, passed away on July 1, 2022. Dr. Karduck’s personal passion evolved around the area of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This scholarship will be given to a physician assistant science student(s) that is entering their fifth year of study. The candidate(s) must have a history of working (paid or unpaid) in pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS), which will be presented as part of their application. The candidate(s) must present a verified need for financial assistance.

Established in 2021. Mr. Klein, a 42-year pillar of the business school faculty from 1949-1991, passed away on October 8, 2020. The recipient will be a student in the Shields School of Business, with preference given to a business analytics student, followed by a business management student. Established by the parents of Jody Latin, who was to enroll as a freshman nursing major as a member of the Class of 1992, but tragically died in a car accident. This award was created to honor Jody’s life and to also honor another student completing the freshman year at Saint Francis. This award will be given to the outstanding freshman nursing major based on the highest grade point average.
TERRENCE P. LAUGHLIN '77 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2019 by Bank of America Charitable Foundation in memory of Terry Laughlin ’77, senior official at Bank of America, who passed away in 2018. This scholarship will be awarded to freshmen from the Pittsburgh area, specifically the Pennsylvania counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland, regardless of major. GEORGE LINK, JR., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established by the George Link, Jr., Foundation as a memorial to Mr. Link, a New York philanthropist. As established, the fund permits the University scholarship committee to select a student each year, beginning in 1982, on the basis of need and academic merit. The scholarship will be renewable for each recipient for a maximum of four years.

This Award supports graduating candidates from either a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral program in any department, and conducting research in Exercise Oncology. Established by Lori’s husband, Myles Hannan. Lori was a nursing graduate who passed away in 2013. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman nursing major, with first preference from the Johnstown, PA area. Second preference would include a student from Cambria County, PA. Third preference would be for a student from western Pennsylvania, with a fourth from Pennsylvania. Commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps at his graduation in June 1966, Jim was deployed to Vietnam in January 1967 and killed in action on May 25 that same year. Awards will be made to undergraduate students enrolled in ecologically oriented sciences or engineering programs.
MIKEY'S HEART AND HUSTLE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2017 by the Robert Katan Family in memory of Michael Katan, son of Anne Marie and Robert ’72 Katan. Explicitly, the scholarship will be given to a student-athlete who demonstrates a desire to achieve, to never give up and to succeed both on and off the field. The recipient will be a student-athlete who has completed his or her freshman year; is returning for the next academic year, is in good academic standing, and demonstrates both heart and hustle as determined by the Saint Francis University Director of Athletics with advisement from the coaching staff and senior University administrators in the financial aid office. The scholarship will be distributed annually to a new student who will be recognized at the Athletics Award Banquet. The award will rotate to a different team that is eligible to receive a scholarship every year.

This scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior student who is majoring in education with the intent of teaching in a public or private school at the elementary or secondary level. The student must remain in good academic standing to be eligible for the scholarship in succeeding years.
JOSEPH, EDITH, AND JOSETTE ROBERTS AWARD
Established in 1999 by family members and friends in honor of the late Joseph Roberts and his widow, Edith Roberts of Cresson. The endowment was expanded in 2009 to include their late daughter, Josette. Mr. Roberts, who died in April 1999, served a long and distinguished career as President Commissioner of Cambria County. Josette, a 1960 graduate of Saint Francis, was a dedicated educator in Cambria County schools. Preference in the selection of award recipients will be given to students majoring in Physician Assistant Sciences from Cambria County.

This scholarship will be awarded to one freshman per academic year from Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, MD. Established in 1997 by John '64 and Sheila '65 Connors and other classmates of William Ryan, a 1966 graduate of Saint Francis, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969 and Judith Ryan Azzara '66. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students by the scholarship committee, one of which is a preferred education major.
SAINT FRANCIS UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1983, the Alumni Association Scholarship is awarded to two students who are the children of Saint Francis alumni. One of the awards is named in memory of Daniel N. Molchan, a 1979 graduate of Saint Francis, who was treasurer of the National Alumni Association at the time of his death in 2000. To qualify for this scholarship, prospective students must submit a cover letter accompanied by an essay not exceeding 250 words addressing either: 1) the role Saint Francis has played in their family; or 2) expounding upon one of the "Goals of Franciscan Higher Education" as set forth in the University's Mission Statement. Award winners shall be selected based upon academic excellence in high school, the quality of the essay, and financial need.

Established in 2021 by Shields School of Business faculty members Dr. Randy Frye and Dr. John Miko. The recipient of this Award will be a full-time undergraduate Black or African-American student or a student of Black or African-American descent who is working toward a traditional undergraduate degree within the Shields School of Business. Established by family members and friends as a memorial to the couple's dedication to education. Dr. Shields, a graduate of Saint Francis, was a member of the University's Board of Trustees when he died in 1993. Mrs. Shields, an honors graduate of Seton Hill University, had served on the faculty of the Saint Francis Education Department before she retired from teaching. She died in 1991. Preference will be given to students from Cambria County who demonstrate an interest in the teaching of English, creative writing and dramatics.
JUDITH GILLIGAN SMITH SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2021 by Judith Gilligan Smith, Class of 1970. This scholarship will be awarded to three incoming freshmen who are enrolled in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) or the Department of Education, have graduated high school with a minimum B+ average, and present verified financial need. Candidates for the scholarship should possess excellent interpersonal skills and be involved in community service. The recipients will maintain the scholarship for up to four academic years, contingent on maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA.

Established in 1988 by the Stokes Club to honor Maurice Stokes, a 1955 graduate and All-American basketball player. Maurice went on to play professionally with the Cincinnati Royals. He died in 1970 following a twelve-year illness. The endowment funds a men's Division I basketball scholarship.

This Award was funded by an anonymous donor. Margaret Tobin was a former director of the Pasquerilla Library. She passed away in 1986.
TORIE'S JOURNEY AWARD
Torie Lingenfelter was a 2007 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School. She continued her education at Saint Francis University, where she received a bachelor's degree in Health Science in 2011 and a master's degree in Health Science in 2012. She continued her studies in the nursing program and was a junior in class standing when she passed away in September 2012 as a result of an automobile accident. To honor Torie's memory, her family established this Award. It will be awarded to a Bishop Guilfoyle graduate who is a nursing major. If no students meet this criteria, the award will be given to a student from Blair County who is a nursing major. Student must demonstrate financial need.
LUKE TROTZ LEGACY AWARD
Established in 2022 by Saint Francis University students and the Office of Student Engagement, honors, recognizes, and celebrates Luke’s life. Luke always encouraged the student body to be their best selves, and he created a space where all students could be heard. He was a coach, a mentor, and a friend. He supported an environment where students could ‘Become that Someone’ they were meant to be. This award will be given to an outstanding student who is actively involved in a recognized student organization and exemplifies Luke’s character and commitment to making Saint Francis University and its students the best they can be.

FELICIA TOTH SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2017 by Felicia Toth ’83, who was a part-time, off-campus student in Accounting. She was an Internal Revenue Agent with the U.S. Treasury Department. This scholarship will be awarded to two incoming SFU freshman, one male, one female, who graduated from Bishop McCort Catholic High School in Johnstown, PA, and has substantiated financial need. The donor prefers the awards be distributed as follows: first preference, business management majors; second, accounting; third, any other majors within the Shields School of Business; fourth, physician assistant science; fifth, any other major. The students will hold the scholarship for one academic year.

THE UPLIFT ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2022 by Joy Thoma ’80. This scholarship will be divided equally to three students enrolled in the Francis Worldwide School of Continuing Studies in either an associate degree or bachelor degree program. The students must have substantiated financial need and preference will be given to those who (i) identify from at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American-Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander-American, and/or Hispanic-American, or (ii) have been justice impacted.

Established in 2021 for Dr. Woo, a Professor Emeritus of Economics and 26-year pillar of the business school faculty from 1961-1987, passed away in 2016. This scholarship will be awarded to one student, an incoming full-time freshman with verified financial need. The recipient will be a student enrolled in the Shields School of Business, with preference given to a student majoring in Economics. The recipient will maintain the award for their freshman year only, with a new student chosen annually. The recipient must earn a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better after the Fall semester in order to continue receiving the scholarship for the Spring semester.

This is the scholarship that was Established in 2014 by Frederick C. Travaglini '75. This award will be conferred to a full-time student who is enrolled as a history/secondary education major, has a minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrated financial need and attained junior class standing. The recipient will be selected by faculty in the history and education programs. If there are no suitable candidates in history/secondary education, preference will then be given to students enrolled in history/middle childhood education or early childhood education.

Established in 2012 by Dr. Rose A. Clark and Dr. Edward P. Zovinka in honor of Mary and Paul Zovinka, and their many efforts to provide a better life for their family. The endowment will fund summer undergraduate research experiences for Saint Francis University chemistry majors. The researchers will be chosen by the Chemistry Department Faculty based on an interest in the field of chemistry including graduate school, research potential, service to the Chemistry Department and quality point average.
