Discovering Development: Highlights from Our Doctor of Physical Therapy Program's Baby Day Event

Department of Physical Therapy | 10/23/2024

On October 4, 2024, our Doctor of Physical Therapy program hosted its annual Baby Day event designed to bridge classroom knowledge with real-world pediatric assessment. This unique opportunity allowed our students to observe and engage with children at various developmental stages, enhancing their understanding of motor skills and assessment techniques.

Purpose and Learning Experience

The Baby Day event served as a vital hands-on learning experience for our DPT students. By observing fourteen children, ranging from eight weeks to six years old, students encouraged the children to perform functional activities such as sitting, rolling, and jumping. This interactive environment allowed them to apply pediatric outcome measures to assess motor function while guessing the children's ages based on their motor performance. This playful engagement made learning enjoyable and provided invaluable insights into child development. Students reported that the experience significantly enhanced their ability to evaluate motor skills, deepening their understanding of pediatric physical therapy. Hands-on experiences are essential for preparing our students to excel in their future careers as physical therapists, especially in the pediatric field.
