OT student interning on Capitol Hill
Tori Martin, a fourth-year Master of Occupational Therapy student, was awarded the prestigious Ann Eppard Scholarship and congressional internship presented at the Presidents Awards Convocation on April 26.
Tori is currently completing her internship in the office of U.S. House Representative Bill Shuster R-PA 9th district on Capitol Hill. Tori has so far learned the ins-and-outs of the voting process, met many staff and legislators, and is now trained to provide tours to visitors to the Hill. She talks to constituents about their concerns and if this is not enough, it's only her first of four weeks on the internship!
Tori is the very first Occupational Therapy student to apply for and receive this scholarship. She is gaining experience and knowledge to be a voice for Occupational Therapists among the people who make decisions about healthcare in the U.S.
In addition to these accomplishments, OT Practice included her achievement in their most recent publication (read it here).
The Ann Eppard Memorial Scholarship and Congressional Internship program
This Scholarship and Internship program offers scholarships for summer congressional internships. Scholarships and congressional internship placements are awarded annually to deserving upper-level Saint Francis University students, with preference for young women from Pennsylvania without regard for race, religion, or ethnicity.
Ann Eppard, a native Pennsylvanian, was chief of staff to Congressman Bud Shuster who served as the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee.
One six-week congressional internship is awarded each summer, and the selection process is competitive.
The successful candidate is an upper-level student. The intern has a strong academic background, possesses good communication and research skills, and has a genuine interest in the legislative processes, government and law.
