SFU Athletics | 03/31/2025

Now, back where it all started, Sweetney brings experience and heart. “This isn’t just a job—it’s personal,” said Sweetney. “I’m proud to be back and excited to  help our student-athletes succeed on and off the court.”

Big news out of Loretto! Saint Francis University men’s basketball is keeping it in the family as Head Coach Luke McConnell has promoted Red Flash alum Devin Sweetney to  Associate Head Coach.

Sweetney, who returned to his alma mater for the 2024–25 season, wasted no time making an impact—helping lead SFU to its first NEC Tournament Championship in 34 years and a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s First Four.

“Devin’s been a game-changer from day one,” said McConnell. “It’s the best job in the  world to coach basketball, and even better when you get to do it with someone like him.”

As a player from 2006–2010, Sweetney was a force on the court—finishing his career in the top 10 in scoring and in the top 15 in rebounding in program history. His professional journey took him across 17 countries, including the NBA D-League, and even a stint with the Denver Nuggets. He built a strong coaching resume after playing, including roles in the  NBA G League and high school ranks.
