Scuba Club Cleans Up Glendale Lake

The Saint Francis SCUBA Club volunteered on SFU’s annual R.E.D. (Reaching Every Door) Day to clean up the lake at Prince Gallitzin State Park. Nine students under the direction of Master SCUBA Diver Trainers, Nick Weakland and Dr. Patricia Fitzgerald donned wet and dry suits to dive into a portion of Glendale Lake practicing their search and rescue skills to remove any trash or unnatural debris polluting the beautiful park. Engineering Program Hosts Networking Event

The Saint Francis University Engineering Department hosted its’ 2nd Annual “Meet and Greet” networking event last Thursday to connect current engineering majors with successful engineering professionals. The project to build a Saint Francis University Tiny Classroom is officially a reality! The Tiny Classroom Big Impact project, currently under construction, will provide hands-on, renewable energy education for SFU students and community members in central and southwestern Pennsylvania. A year ago, the Institute for Energy dreamed an idea to construct a tiny mobile classroom. They envisioned the classroom would utilize renewable energy and serve as a teaching tool about sustainability and power technologies for communities in the region. Saint Francis University student, Elise Dumouchelle of Ashburn, Virginia , gained valuable experience during a 6-week Congressional internship this summer in the Washington, DC office of Congressman Bill Shuster. Dumouchelle, who is a triple major in International Studies , Political Science, and Spanish , is the recipient of the 2017 Ann Eppard Memorial Scholarship and Congressional Internship . Saint Francis University’s Class of 2017 Nursing graduates, who earned their Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing this past May, have already gone on to pass National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). The Nursing Department received word this month that all 15 of the new graduates had passed the exam on their first try. On September 8, 2017, 70-year-old Brother Shamus McGrenra T.O.R., a stage 4 colon cancer survivor, will tackle his toughest route in the history of the annual #GoBroShamus Charity Bike Ride . The journey will begin in Bar Harbor, Maine and cover roughly 1,000 miles of mountainous terrain, taking Bro. Shamus through 10 states and several major cities before coming to an end in Jamestown, Virginia. Bro. Students from Saint Francis University helped give people in need something to smile about last weekend. MOM-n-PA Dental Missions hosted their 5th annual clinic this year at Gannon University in Erie, PA on June 17th and 18th. The MOM-n-PA mission is a two-day large scale dental clinic where dental treatment is provided at no cost to individuals who cannot afford dental care. Over 700 dental, medical and pharmacy professionals, students and lay volunteers freely donated their time to help at MOM-n-PA 2017. The two-day clinic provided dental care to nearly 1,000 patients. New Research on Bolivian Mines

Loretto, Pennsylvania — Researchers from Saint Francis University, the University of Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania State University have found that exposure to trace metals from potatoes grown in soil irrigated with waters from the Potosi mining region in Bolivia may put residents at risk of non-cancer health illnesses. The world’s largest silver deposit lies in this region, and exposure to mining pollution from contaminated irrigation waters worries residents. “In this high mountain desert, water is a critically precious resource and the use of metal-polluted waters for irrigation may have
